Le Palace was a mystic nightclub of the ‘80s, a Parisian equivalent to Studio 54 where underground culture, fashion, and music combined for a night of flamboyant fun. The waiters were dressed by couturier Thierry Mugler and regulars included Mick Jagger, Karl Lagerfeld, and Yves Saint Laurent. At the door, Edwinge Belmore was the queen of the night, deciding who would get in or not.

For the Spring/Summer 2016 Haute Couture collection, French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier decided to pay homage to his former muse, who passed away last year, transforming his runway into the exterior of Le Palace with models coming in and out of the club’s door, cigarettes, glass of champagne, or a can of beer in hand.

When Le Palace opened, Grace Jones had sung La Vie en Rose while sitting on a Pink Harley Davidson, and the singer’s music was played during the runway presentation adding to the celebration of the era’s hedonism and “the decade of excess.”

Gaultier’s creations recalled the clothing of some of Le Palace’s famous party-goers, such as the famed pyjamas of Loulou de la Falaise, the perfecto motorcycle jacket of a young Farida Khelfa (a guest at the show), and the glittering overalls of Grace Jones.

The theme of the night was glam, with lacy lingerie dresses, robe jackets loosely belted and worn over skinny bras, large corset belts, and sequin dresses, and of course with 1980s hallmarks like strong shouldered tuxedos, distressed denim, puffed-up hair styles and fishnet stockings. His models wore skinny ties and nonchalant bomber jackets (a current trend in ready to wear).

The color palette had a good deal of black and white, along with flashes of orange, red, and gold that added drama and pizzazz to the looks.
