Spring 2017 Haute Couture: Jean Paul Gaultier Brings in the Harvest

Jean Paul Gaultier’s shows are always much anticipated events on the couture calendar, full of energy and joie de vivre, and the presentation of his Spring 2017 collection did not disappoint.

The French couturier brought the warmth of the coming seasons to a wintry Paris, with a new collection inspired by nature. Daisies, peonies and tropical hibiscus peppered his catwalk creations in print and embroideries, and were echoed in his accessories, with flowery shoes and wheat-inspired jewelry, while his bride danced her way along the catwalk before being swept off her feet by her hunky, shirtless groom and whisked away in a wheel-barrow.

There were a few of Jean Paul Gaultier’s trademarks, such as stripes, a corset (though this time loosely tied and open at the front) and a conical bra (less pointy than usual), but there were also new take on the tuxedo, belted with an oversized taffeta bow, and interesting trompe l’oeil design – what looked like a jean jacket was actually made entirely of pleated ribons, while a black pareo knotted high over a white t-shirt was actually a dress.

This collection offered big-shouldered, structured silhouette, as well as more fluid peasant dresses and blouses to match the theme. There were plenty of dramatic draping around the waist, along with off-shoulder asymmetry (even dresses with just one sleeve).

Above all, the collection showcased the savoir-faire of the couturier’s in-house atelier: there were several outfits entirely made of tightly pleated ribbons (see below).
