Spring 2017 Haute Couture: Ziad Nakad's Butterfly Paradise
Following presentations by Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, and Georges Hobeika, it was Ziad Nakad’s turn to wow the Parisian couture crowd.
Although the Lebanese designer has been in business since 1997, he remains relatively little known on the international scene. This could change with his second couture presentation in Paris, which showcased a dreamy vision of elegance supported by craftsmanship know-how.
As with his Lebanese compatriots, Nakad’s creations for his Spring/Summer 2017 collection were full of delicate embroideries, scintillating sequins and heavy embellishment on layers of organza and tulle. Inspired by butterflies, this latest collection offered them rendered in sparkling embroideries or 3-D laser-cut appliques, fluttering amongst flower embellishments.
Using pastel hues (salmon pink, powder blue, golden honey), the designer sent down the runway a selection of floor-skimming princess gowns, with delicately belted waists and generous skirts. There were a few audacious asymmetrical gowns combining a high and low hemline that managed to remain chic while also daring to reveal plenty of leg.
Oversized butterfly appliques could be found at a waist or perched on a shoulder, and the delicate insects were occasionally recalled in wing-like sleeves. Meanwhile a bridal gown was entirely embroidered with embossed butterflies.
