Fall 2017 Haute Couture: The Winged Creations of Rami Al Ali

For his Fall/Winter 2017 Haute Couture Collection, Syrian designer Rami Al Ali was inspired by the artworks of Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849–1921), an American artist who painted numerous angel figures dressed in Grecian style.

But the Dubai-based designer replaced the Neoclassical loose draping with structured ones for a sophisticated silhouette.

His creations  primarily in pale nude, silver and dusty pink, reflected the vision of an idealized innocent beauty, though the neutral tone collection did incorporate a few claret gowns.

Feathers were used discreetly in the collection for example decorating the inside of a split skirt or a sleeve, or to highlight structured volumes and asymmetric folds in organza gowns and the overall effect was of understated, refined elegance perfectly suited to any red-carpet event.

The designer continued this feathered theme through light tone on tone embroideries, while also representing feathers blades more abstractly through the use of small silk gazaar strips that crisscrossed on a bodice, while small pieces of tulle were expertly layered and had beading to create the illusion of a feathered gown.

The collection includes short playful cocktail dress fringed with feathers, as well as a daring sheer pant leg jumpsuit, with a ruffle cape overlay.
