Artketing: Miquel Barceló Designs Château Mouton Rothschild 2012 Label

Jean Cocteau, Georges Braque, Salvador Dali, Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Pierre Soulages, Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons … every year since 1945, the Château Mouton Rothschild label has been illustrated with an original artwork created by a well-known contemporary artist. This year, it’s the turn of Catalan artist Miquel Barceló to add his imprint to the famous labels.

The painter and sculptor is the creator of dreamlike universes with intense color and he often uses a combination of techniques and materials to give his works a striking relief. His fresco for the Mouton Rothschild 2012, now replicated on the label, revisits the Château’s historical emblem with two rams facing each other in a style reminiscent of ancient cave paintings.

The 2012 vintage was personally chosen by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who died on August 22, and she had been responsible for selecting the artist each year since the 1980s and, in 1982, created the traveling exhibition "Mouton Rothschild, Paintings for the Labels," which brought the original artworks for the labels to a wider international audience.
