Dice Kayek F/W 2014: An Architectural Couture

Debuting at Paris couture week Fall/Winter 2014 as an invited guest, Dice Kayek presented a polished collection of 15 short dresses that were architectural, yet with an organic feel and attention to details.

Titled "Winter Garden," the collection of dramatically shaped dresses from the Paris-based brand, founded by Turkish sisters Ece and Ayşe Ege in 1992, offered an autumn bouquet of femme-fleurs (flower women). Looks were named after flowers and the designers twisted and molded duchesse satin to create petals, stamens and calyxes, with pleated organza adding some transparent texture and lightness, while small, sparkling glass beads sometimes evoked droplets of rain or a morning dew.

The design duo has won accolades for their architectural sensibility and approach to fashion, having won the Jameel Prize 3 — an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition awarded by the Victoria & Albert Museum — in 2013 for Istanbul Contrast, a collection of garments that evoked Istanbul’s architectural and artistic heritage.

With this first showing, they successfully aligned themselves with the new generation of designers in Paris, such as Bouchra Jarrar, Christophe Josse, and Stephane Rolland, who are focusing more on construction than glittering fabrics.
