Spring 2014 Haute Couture: Atelier Versace's Art Deco Tattoos

Donatella Versace added graphic lines of sequins to the bodies of her goddesses, bringing a contemporary Art Deco flair to her Atelier Versace Spring 2014 presentation that opened couture week on Sunday night in Paris. The elongated, fluid silhouettes with dramatic hoods attached to jackets and dresses channeled the allure of singer Grace Jones, circa 1980s.

"I love to combine the traditions of couture with the daring of contemporary life. This collection has a control and elegance, as well as a provocative attitude, especially from the embellishments that are like tattoos on the skin," Donatella Versace said in a press statement.

The Italian designer used controlled draping to sculpt lines of sleek tailoring around the body, or more generous draping for fluid silk jersey dresses.

Decorative graphic lines using metallic bugle beads or Swarovski crystals embroidered on invisible tulle create the tattoo effect. And as usual, the designer was generous with her use of crystals, draped to create the bustier of evening dresses, embroidered to emphasize body curves, mixed with furs for an opulent feel.

Lady Gaga, who fronts the latest Versace campaign, was seated front row wearing a black evening gown by Atelier Versace.
