Fall 2019 Haute Couture: Paolo Sebastian's Nordic Folktale

[press release] Inspired by Nordic folklore kindled in enchantment and legend, couture house Paolo Sebastian introduces its Autumn/Winter 2019-20 Collection entitled, East of the Sun and West of the Moon.

The collection follows the journey of a peasant maiden, who in the pursuit of true love, embarks on arelentless quest to save a prince imprisoned in a castle that lies east of the sun and west of the moon.

Creative Director and Designer Paul Vasileff said the collection showed a more refined aesthetic, with emphasis on bespoke embroideries and structural silhouettes. “This season we’ve invested a lot of time developing new styles, silhouettes and bespoke embroideries to capture the essence of the folktale,” Vasileff said.

“The craftsmanship and techniques used in this collection really showcase what our atelier is capable of. There is a lot of hidden corsetry and underpinnings in these garments that are so seamless and beautifully executed; I am so proud of what the team have achieved,” he said

“With each collection we release, we try to push the boundaries to create something that captures the imagination and allows people to dream.”

Featuring a dark and archaic aesthetic reminiscent of bygone eras; couture pieces in sombre tones of black, pewter, and moss are juxtaposed by rose and pearl accents, and embellished with hand-sewn Scandinavian folk-inspired embroideries and intricate lithograph-style thread-work.

Billowing bishop sleeves and tea-length pinafore dresses in textures of soft tulle and delicate Chantilly lace are contrasted by daring necklines, structural pleating and three-dimensional metallic bijouterie, evoking a sense of reverie synonymous with Nordic mythology.

This year marks the labels fourth year presenting in the couture capital. “Paris is the epicentre of the fashion world and the home of couture. It’s always such an honour to be able to showcase our work there.” Stand out pieces include a tailored cashmere coat and dégradé sleeved cocktail gown, each gilded with celestial-inspired map embroidery; illustrating the heroine’s journey through the northern, southern, eastern and western winds of the tale. Whilst corsetry creates beautifully defined waisted silhouette.
