Guo Pei's ACM Exhibition Wins Best Design Exhibition for 2019

Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture 2019 - held by the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) in Singapore last June -  has won the Best Design Award of the 6th annual Global Fine Art Awards.

The exquisite showcase spotlighted art through couture in a juxtaposition of masterpieces created centuries apart, examining the relevance and impact of Chinese art, and how Chinese aesthetics and traditions are being reimagined for the world today.

Guo Pei’s dramatic, sculptural gowns reflect influences from growing up in Beijing surrounded by Chinese imperial art and mythology. Her creations also express her personal take on contemporary fashion and aesthetics.

“The influences of traditional Chinese art and fashion is fundamental to my craft. I liken Singapore to the phoenix, a legendary ancient bird that represents Chinese empresses and is considered the most noble representation of women,@ the designer said at the time.

Serving as points of encounter and departure, the ACM exhibition juxtaposed 29 embroidered masterworks by China’s premier couturier with 20 Chinese art masterpieces in the museum’s collection, inviting contemplation on how Guo Pei references and reimagines Chinese aesthetics and tradition for China and the world today.
